Conquering the Pandemic, Preparing the Best Strategy for Hospitals: Media Coverage of International Conference Hosted by Master of Hospital Management Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya

“Thriving and full of renowned speakers!” These two expressions exactly represent the success of the International Seminar, hosted by Master of Hospital Management Study Program (MMRS), entitled:

Hospital Strategic Response to Global Public Health Disaster

(the Case of COVID-19)”

This two-day event which was held from 19 – 20 November 2020 included 3 plenaries and 3 symposiums with a broad array of themes. This event was opened by the Head of the MMRS Study Program, Dr. dr. Tita Hariyanti, M.Kes, and the Head of the Committee, dr. Holipah, PhD.

The theme of the first plenary was “Pandemic 360o: Looking through the Eyes of the fighters and frontliners “. This theme was delivered by an international speaker from University Sains Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Asrul Akmal Shafie. He discussed how public health policies are implemented from a health economic point of view. This session was also attended by the Head of Public Health Division of DKI Jakarta, Dr. Fify Mulyani, MARS.

The committee also invited Ms. Mariana Kristin from Mojokerto to share her story from the patient’s point of view. She is one of the Covid-19 patients who has successfully recovered. Ms. Mariana Kristin told us how she and her family struggled to recover from Covid-19 and to bear with people’s scorn. She shared the story with genuine enthusiasm and emotion.

“God … I can’t bear the pain, just let me die instead of suffering from Covid-19,” said Ibu Mariana when telling her story. She told us that the support from the family, community, and also the encouragement from Dr. dr. Tri Maharani, M.Si, Sp.EM (Doctor, as well as patient, confirmed positive for Covid-19) made her strong and able to survive.

In this session, Dr. dr. Tri Maharani, M.Si, Sp.EM also shared her stories of fighting the virus from the moment she was confirmed positive until she was successfully recovered. The presence of this Covid-19 survivor in telling the stories is expected to be a breath of fresh air for other Covid-19 patients so that they will not be discouraged in fighting for recovery. Then from the provider side, dr. Daeng M. Faqih, SH., MH as the Head of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) shared his insight. From the hospital point of view, an interesting explanation was given by Dr. dr. Kohar Hari Santoso, Sp.An KIC KAP as the Director of Saiful Anwar Hospital Malang and dr. Corona Rintawan, Sp.EM.

On the second day, an oral presentation session was held and attended by the postgraduate students of Master of Hospital Management Study Program, FKUB, and from other universities. The participants were very enthusiastic, proven by the large number of participants in the oral presentation who attended the event.

In the 1st symposium, the speakers were Dr. Pandu Harimurti, MPPM, Prof. Supasit Pannarunothai., MD., DTM&H., M.Sc(PH)., Ph.D, Dr. Ye Htut, M.B.B.S., MPP., MHA., CPHQ and drg. Farichah Hanum. This symposium discussed the strategies that can be implemented amidst this crisis in terms of Human Resources and Quality Control. Besides, the participants could learn how other countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, the Netherlands, and the USA are dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic.

In the second symposium, “The Patient’s and Health Provider’s View: The Meaning of Value to the Person who Matters Most”, the speakers were Dr. dr. Viera Wardhani, M.Kes, FISQua, Dr. Dearisa Surya, SP.KJ, and Dr. dr. Tri Maharani, M.Si. “Being a Covid patient turned me from ‘the healer’ into the one who was healed by others. I don’t want to fall, I must be strong. When I have recovered, I host some activities to raise public awareness of the dangers of Covid-19, and produce masks and PPE through community empowerment. This is something that makes me excited to continue serving and benefiting others.” said Dr. Maha, her nickname.

At the end of the symposium under the theme of “Challenges and Issues of Organizing a Hospital to Support the Covid-19 Pandemic”, the committee invited another foreign speaker from the Netherlands, namely Dr. Jan Nouwen (Erasmus University) and national speakers dr. Rony Kurniawan.

This two-day event was a huge success. “I am very happy to be allowed to take part in an oral presentation of this international seminar. Besides boosting my confidence, this event also gave us some insights on how to plan appropriate hospital strategies in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. Wish MMRS a successful journey ahead!” said Sylvia Kitty Simanungkalit, a student of MMRS class of 2019 who is also the Head of Public Relations of Persada Hospital Malang.
