The third semester is drawing near. It is, therefore, students of the class of 2016 took the integrated final examination for the second time. Similar to previous integrated first-semester final examination, this time the students were asked to review problems faced by several hospitals in Malang area based on several aspects. These aspects include hospital quality, environment and architecture, hospital law, logistics, economics, and clinical services management.
In this exam, the topics covered by the students vary considerably, ranging from outpatient department, emergency department, inpatient department, to operating room in four different hospitals. Students were required to observe the implementation of Joint Commission International (JCI) standards in their respective department, identify and analyze problems based on those standards, find the root cause, find solutions, and finally to develop strategic plans and cost benefit analysis of the possible options.
The panelists, who are from the hospital where students undertook the study, were also invited. The panelists were expected to confirm the validity of the data presented by the students. In addition, they were also expected to have benefited from the study results, thus, they could improve the service quality of their hospital. Having said that, this exam benefits not only the students academically, but also becomes a tool for Hospital Management program to contribute to improving the quality of hospital management in Indonesia. Moreover, as soon as the exam ends, one of the student groups had the initiative to submit the study results as well as guidelines, standard operating procedures, and work instructions that still not existed in the hospital. This shows that the contribution of students in improving the quality of hospital services is real and practical.
